Definition

A book year (also called fiscal year or financial year) is an accounting period, typically 12 months, within a folder. Companies close their books and report their financial results per book year.

Purpose

  • Defines the accounting period in which each transaction is recorded.
  • Separates open periods, where entries can still be added, from closed periods.

Structure

Each book year has:
  • A name (name), typically the year, e.g. 2026
  • A start date (start) and an end date (end)
  • A closed flag (closed): a closed book year normally cannot be modified or receive new entries

Relationships

  • A book year belongs to a folder. A folder can have several book years, usually with one open at a time.
  • The accounting date of a journal entry (date) sets the book year it falls into. For an invoice, the document date (invoice_date) can differ from the accounting date.
  • Some accounting software numbers documents per journal and per book year.
