# Analytic accounts

### Definition

An **analytic account** is a value within an [analytic plan](/unified-apis/accounting/concepts/analytical-accounting/analytic-plan), such as Marketing in the Department plan or Project A in the Project plan.
You assign analytic accounts to invoice lines and journal entry lines to give them a business context.

### Purpose

* Tag revenues and expenses with a business context.
* Report amounts per department, project or other dimension.

### Structure

Each analytic account has:

* An **identifier** (`id`)
* A **code** (`code`). Some accounting software requires a unique code
* A **name** (`name`)
* An **active** flag (`active`). On creation, the default is `true`
* A **currency** (`currency`)
* On read only: the **amounts** booked on the account (`debit`, `credit`, `balance`)
* In multiple plans mode: the **plan** (`analytic_plan`)

On creation, `code`, `name` and `currency` are required.

### Relationships

* Each analytic account belongs to an [analytic plan](/unified-apis/accounting/concepts/analytical-accounting/analytic-plan). With the default plan endpoints, it belongs to the default plan. With the multiple plans endpoints, `analytic_plan` gives the plan.
* [Invoice](/unified-apis/accounting/concepts/invoice) lines and [journal entry](/unified-apis/accounting/concepts/journal-entry) lines reference analytic accounts:
  * Default plan: one analytic account per line, in `analytic_account`.
  * Multiple plans: a list of plans in `analytic_distribution`. Each plan (`analytic_plan`) has analytic accounts (`analytic_account`) with a `percentage` of the untaxed amount.
* Percentages are whole numbers. In each plan, they must total 100.
* When you create a journal entry, lines always use `analytic_distribution`.
* [Financial entries](/unified-apis/accounting/concepts/financial-entry) have no analytic accounts.
* To choose between default plan and multiple plans endpoints, see [Single and multiple analytic plans](/unified-apis/accounting/concepts/analytical-accounting/multiple-plans).

### API endpoints

* [Get analytic accounts](/api-reference/endpoints/accounting/get-analytic-accounts): list the analytic accounts of the default plan.
* [Get analytic accounts (multiple analytic plans)](/api-reference/endpoints/accounting/get-analytic-accounts-multiple-analytic-plans): list the analytic accounts of all plans.
* [Get analytic account](/api-reference/endpoints/accounting/get-analytic-account): get one analytic account of the default plan.
* [Get analytic account (multiple analytic plans)](/api-reference/endpoints/accounting/get-analytic-account-multiple-analytic-plans): get one analytic account of a given plan.
* [Create analytic account](/api-reference/endpoints/accounting/create-analytic-account): create an analytic account in the default plan.
* [Create analytic account (multiple analytic plans)](/api-reference/endpoints/accounting/create-analytic-account-multiple-analytic-plans): create an analytic account in a given plan.
* [Update analytic account](/api-reference/endpoints/accounting/update-analytic-account): update an analytic account of the default plan.
* [Update analytic account (multiple analytic plans)](/api-reference/endpoints/accounting/update-analytic-account-multiple-analytic-plans): update an analytic account of a given plan.

Not every accounting software supports every analytic account endpoint. Creating and updating analytic accounts has limited support. Check the [coverage matrix](/connectors/accounting/coverage).
